How Riverwalk was built

Bradenton is not the biggest town in Florida, but it is an ever-expanding community ever since the 1960s when it dredged the Manatee River to add over 50 acres of dry land to its downtown area. Upon this impressive expansion feat, the region became known as “The Sand Pile” due to the large amounts of silt that the dredging process had left behind.

In the 1980s, the authorities applied for a federal grant to build a waterfront park on the “sand pile.” Unfortunately, construction stagnated, and it wasn’t until 2010 that the Riverwalk Park emerged as a reliable project that was relevant for the community.

The Riverwalk Park broke ground in September 2011, and little over a year later, on October 18, 2012, it opened its doors to the public. The area became an instant attraction among the locals and tourists alike.

Nowadays, the Bradenton authorities aim to expand the Riverwalk Park. In 2017, they published a master plan that has the mission to extend the area to the Eastern part of the city where two other local attractions are, the Manatee Mineral Springs Park and Manatee Village Historical Park.
